Powell1 Candice Powell Professor Ross Arkansas History 19 September 2011 Racism versus White Supremacy Racism is a very sensitive subject. These articles discuss racism in an effort to understand what was behind slavery, white supremacy and racism in general. The Walter Johnson article provides an evaluation of the role of agency on discussions about slavery. He argues that analyses of slavery have focused too much on the agency of slaves and as a result, have allowed liberal notions of free will to improperly dominate discussions of what it meant to be enslaved. This has led many scholars to confuse slaves' humanity, agency, and resistance to slavery. Walter Johnson wants to “set aside agency as the link to humanity.” The article suggests that historians should get past the question of whether slaves had humanity or not. Instead, there should be a closer look at the conditions of enslaved humanity. This is possible if agency and humanity are viewed side by side.
