Meredith Thomas What is Culture? Culture influences every aspect of a person’s lifestyle and those around them. Even so, it is not often that one wonders what this word stands for or actually means. To me, culture is a symbolic representation of a group’s behavior and way of life that allows its members to interact with one another. There are many things that influence a culture to develop it into what it is. This leads to the creation numerous cultures with distinct differences. The word culture originates from the Latin cultura that stems from colere , meaning to cultivate. Cultivate can be defined as the promotion of growth and development. Its root accurately depicts culture in that it is the growth of one’s society together as a single way of life. The word cultivate can also mean the devotion of oneself to. This also displays the meaning of culture in that the members of a cultural society dedicate their lives to its structure and customs. A group’s culture distinguishes the belief systems of its members and also many other
