Meredith Thomas September 24, 2009 MUSC 110, Section 003 Concert Report I Strings I attended a concert presented by the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra was conducted by Donald Portnoy, and featured professional violinist Michael Ludwig. The performance focused on the strings, but also included woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. The concert included three pieces followed by a brief intermission and then a final selection. To begin the concert, the orchestra played the Star-Spangled Banner, and the audience rose to their feet. The next selection was an upbeat piece by Richard Wagner, Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg . Although this was not my favorite song of the concert, I enjoyed its feature of the oboes. The oboe soloist had a beautiful and clear tone that blended well with the strings accompanying. After the second piece was finished the conductor exited the stage and returned with the guest performer of the evening. The violinist performed a song composed by Tchaikovsky in the late 1800’s, and was my personal favorite. The title was
