Meredith Thomas November 12, 2009 MUSC 110, Section 003 Concert Report 3 Strings/Orchestra On October 29, I attended an orchestra performance at my former high school in my hometown of Rock Hill, South Carolina. The performance was held in the auditorium of the newly developed high school, South Pointe. The concert was presented by South Pointe’s Strings and Orchestra group which has around fifty students participating, including my younger sister. While the orchestra is smaller than ones I am accustomed to seeing, this group of students was able to fill the auditorium with a complete and centered tone. The concert featured five pieces ranging in all aspects such as tempo, dynamics, forms, and historical styles. All selections, however, are commonly heard orchestral pieces. I enjoyed this aspect of the concert in that I held a familiarity with the music. The orchestra students dressed in formal black and white concert attire and did a good job of maintaining a professional appearance throughout the performance. To begin their fall concert, the group chose a peaceful, hymn-like piece from the Twentieth-Century era. Composed in 1922 by Jean Sibelius,
