Meredith Thomas The Beauty Ideal Throughout this course, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about women and their place in society today. So many aspects of a woman’s life have been brought into light that I had no idea existed. After studying everything from women’s suffrage, domestic violence, and even reproductive rights, the part that I feel holds the biggest restraint on gaining equality for women is the beauty ideal. As a woman in my 20’s, I would have thought that I would have been aware of anything that had me under its control. However, it was not until my study about the beauty ideal that I realized how media and advertisements had me hypnotized to obsess about my looks. In today’s society, we Americans are surrounded by a concept of physical attractiveness. From childhood, the media has filled our minds with images of idealized men and women. These visions of beauty cause women, not men, to feel the need to tirelessly attempt to embody such icons. The most common models of beauty that have
