Name: __________________________ Principles of GIS GIS4043C/GIS5051C Lab #1-Projecting Data in ArcMap Chapter 13 Lab Requirements: 1. Complete Lab Exercises 13a and 13b and save them to your X drive as instructed in the book. Make sure to save your data to the MyData subfolder (located inside the Chapter 13 folder). STEP 1: If you are working on campus or using the Terminal Server, copy the “Chapter 13” folder to your X:\ drive. The data is located at R:\ GISC 4043c LABS (Note: If you did the tutorial lab you should already have the data saved on your X: drive). If you are working from home using your own copy of ArcGIS, download the Lab 1 data from Blackboard. STEP 2: When you open the existing map and you are browsing for maps please open the map from your storage device . Ex: X:\Chapter13\ex13a.mxd. STEP 3: When you get to exercise 13b close out of ArcMap and reopen when you commence Exercise 13b, or you will have problems with the exercise. Also make sure that when you open your map you are in the data view and not in the layout view. STEP 4: Answer the following questions, each question is worth 2 points. STEP 5: Save your exercises as instructed in the book. * Make sure that you manage your file folders correctly. 1. Define latitude and longitude. Explain how lat/long is expressed and give a numerical example. 2. When you choose a map projection what element are you controlling? 3. Define the process of on-the-fly-projection and why is this important? 4. When is the Albers Equal –Area Conic projection most appropriate and what does this projection preserve?
