ANTH 1001 March 17, 2010 Definition of species: Biological Species concept Fossil record o Phylogenic Species concept-based on descent from common ancestor (share common traits) ; determined by looking on homologous traits; also form or morphology o Paleospecies- based on fossil record; or determined from Intraspecific vs. interspecific variation o Intraspecific- variation within a species that can be accounted for by age or sex differences o Interspecific- variation between two different species; that cannot be accounted by age and sex differences or biological differences Modes of speciation Speciation- development of a species; evolutionary change Cladogenesis- o one species will diverge into two different descendent species; o the original is extinct; o based on some type of isolating mechanism on the original population Anagenesis- o one species gradually changing over time that alternately results in a new species; o continues to change over time o Species 2 and 3 completely different
