Unformatted text preview: Avishkumar Patel Prof, R. Powell 17 th Mar 2010 F I NAL Ans 1) Yes, marketing and advertising are fundamentally exploitative. Marketing is an important part of the business. Without marketing, I think, it would be impossible for any business to survive in todays world. Through marketing, the product of the company reaches to the targeted consumers. Consumers get aware of the product and know that such kind of product do exist in the market. However, the main purpose of business is to create and keep a customer, so they reach to such extend for marketing their product that it becomes exploitation fundamentally. These matters are better explained in four different categories: product, price, promotion, and placement. The decision marketing manager takes includes lots of ethical issues. For example: Products raise obvious concerns about product safety, but the social impact of some products has drawn moral criticism. Aside from tobacco and alcohol, which are frequent targets of complaints, objections have been raised about unhealthful foods, get-guzzling SUVs, and poor- value financial products aimed at the poor. Ethical issues about price include price gouging, predatory pricing, price discrimination, and misleading prices. Promotion is the most visible face of marketing and for this reason it draws the greatest moral scrutiny. Much of the criticism of promotion focuses on questionable sales techniques and possible deception and manipulation in advertising. Many people are also concerned about the intrusiveness of direct marketing and the alleged social harm of some advertisements. Finally, Placement raise ethical issues about anticompetitive practices, such as controlling the channels of distribution, paying so-called slotting allowances for shelf space in stores, and so-called gray marketing, which is the diversion of goods outside officially sanctioned channels. The famous real example of unethical marketing exploitation is the Union Tobacco company, which distributed free tobacco products to the people and especially to teenagers to make them their products addict, without caring for their health. Advertising: we derive benefits from advertisement about products and from the boost that advertising gives to the economy as a whole. But on the other hand companies with products or services to sell regards advertising as a valuable, indeed indispensible marketing tool. Although most advertising is for a product or a service, some of it is devoted to enhancing the image of a corporation or advancing some issue or cause. Therefore here, advertising is used as a tool to create a wrong image in the mind of consumer that the company is one of the best, but actually its not. Advertising is widely criticized over the exploitation. Exaggerated claims and outright falsehoods are the most obvious targets for complaints, followed closely by the lack of taste, ir ritating repetition, and offensive character.
