Metabolic Biochemistry Name:____________ Summer Session 2011 Homework 1 (40 pts.) Section:___________ 1) (5 pts.) How does enzymatic catalysis affect the rate constant (k) for the reaction being catalyzed? Explain. How does this affect the velocity of the catalyzed reaction? 2) (5 pts.) How does enzymatic catalysis affect the equilibrium constant for the reaction being catalyzed? Explain. How does this affect the velocity of the catalyzed reaction? 3) (5 pts.) The following chemical reaction was set up and allowed to proceed to equilibrium: compound X compound Y + compound Z Each compound was found to have the following concentration at equilibrium: compound X 8.2 x10 -6 M compound Y 1.7 x10 -2 M compound Z 1.7 x10 -2 M If the forward rate constant (k 1 ) for the reaction equals 128 sec -1 , calculate the value of the reverse rate constant (k -1 ). Show all of your work, and use the correct units on all constants.

4) (5 pts.) The following exercise involves drawing amino acid structures. You will not be expected to memorize the structures of the 20 different amino acids for the exam, but if you are given the structure of an amino acid you should be able to identify what class ( i.e. , non-polar/hydrophobic; polar, aromatic, pos. charged, neg. charged) it fall in to. a. Draw a generic amino acid structure with the side chain indicated as simply “R.” Make this amino acid at neutral or physiologic pH. b. Draw a dipeptide (two amino acids), that consists of an alanine and a leucine.
