Memory Chapter 8 Memory The capacity and structures used for the retention and retrieval of information Involves three processes: -encoding -storage -retrevial The Three Box Model of Memory The processing of memories goes through three areas: 1.sensory memory/ sensory storage 2. short term(working memory) 3. long term memory Level 1 of the Three Box Model Sensory Memory - contains raw sensations, before perception - very large capacity - material here only briefly (1/2 sec on visual sensations, 2 sec on auditory) Level 2 of the Three Box Model Short Term Memory (STM) Also called working memory Very limited capacity (7+/- 2 chunks of info) Very limited time (30 secs) Can keep info here longer with _maintenance rehearsal Can store more info here with ___chunking________ STM Test: Chunking Test: Level 3 of the Three Box Model Long Term Memory (LTM)

- unlimited storage - detail level varies - info can be forever but distorted - can feed back to STM More on Long Term Memory There are three different types of long term memories 1. Procedural – memories of common physical procedures - mostly accessed implicitly (without thinking) - highly robust to amnesia 2. Episodic memory – memory of the things that we have personally experienced (personal episodes) 3. Semantic memory – memory of general knowledge facts, word meanings Examples: λ I know how to play a guitar = procedural λ I remember my first guitar lesson = episodic λ I know what a guitar is = semantic A Memory Test: Word List #1 Sour Sugar Taste Tart Pie Candy Chocolate Soda Good Hear Cake Tooth A Memory Test: Word List #2 (don’t write anything down yet)!
