Chapter 1 Introduction to Psychology Definition Psychology: the science of behavior and mental processes (mind) Goals of Psychology (ex) Describe : teens, drug use and their attitudes about drug use, collect data, analyze results (describe a specific phenomenon) Predict : what future trend can we predict based on data? (future trends) (make prediction based on data, research etc) Understand : why do teens use drugs? Why do they think its ok? Modify : how can we influence teens so they don’t use drugs or think its ok to use them (change for better) Early Schools of Thought Structuralists : (Wundt & Titchener) - analyzed sensations, images & feeling into basic elements - introspection- looking inward to describe experiences
