1 Page 1 Pre-lab: Read Appendix A, B, C, and D 1. Purpose Familiarize yourself with different measuring instruments such as the vernier caliper, the micrometer, the meter stick, the traveling microscope, and the timer. Calculate the densities of various metallic objects and determine their metal type from a table. Calculate the period of oscillation of different masses. Determine the uncertainty on each measurement and make the error calculation to associate them. 2. Procedure 2.1 Length Measurements Refer to Appendix A for further instructions on how to properly use each measuring instruments. (Your T.A. at the beginning of the class, will give a demonstration of the correct use of the different instruments) With the use of several instruments (vernier caliper, micrometer, meter stick, and traveling microscope), measure the linear dimensions of a parallelepiped, a hollow cylinder, a solid cylinder, and a wire. After weighing each object determine their respective densities. Note: don’t apply to much pressure on the object to be measured by the micrometer; this will not only gives a
