Writing Activity Persuasive appeals Logos: effective supporting arguments, facts, examples, logical connections Ethos: credible, supported statements about yourself and the expertise you are offering Pathos: an understanding of the audience’s interests, motivation, needs Indirect or Direct Strategy? Depends on the reaction you expect from the audience: will they be receptive or non-receptive to your main point? The AIRA Message A -- Gain Attention I -- Build Interest R -- Reduce Resistance A -- Motivate Action The AIRA Message for Your Cover Letter (structure) • Gain Attention • Build interest • Motivate action (interview you) First paragraph (attention-getter): • introduce the central selling feature (education, skills, experience, or some combination of these) • mention the specific job you want • avoid the direct, dull opening “I am applying for the job of…” or "Please accept this letter as an expression of my interest in the position of… . Example Could an honours graduate with a degree in recreation and two years of experience coaching children’s soccer find a position at your camp as program director? Central selling feature based on applicant’s most relevant qualifications Identifies position sought Body • follows logically by expanding on central selling feature • discusses secondary qualifications in order of importance • matches central selling feature to qualifications for the targeted job • provides specific evidence that proves you have the skills • is tailored to reader’s company and industry (not a generic letter) Example...
