Brittany West ARH2051.602 Professor Boyer 28 April 2011 Although the artist, style, and mediums used in these two paintings are very different, they share a common biblical theme. The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was commissioned by Pope Julius II and was created by Michelangelo Buonarroti. Michelangelo started this masterpiece in 1508 and finished in 1512. It is located inside of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City, Rome, Italy. The ceiling is a High Renaissance style fresco and spans approximately 128’ by 45’. Peter Paul Rubens created the Elevation of the Cross in 1610. It is a Flemish Baroque style oil painting on wood. The center panel is 15’ 1 7/8” by 11’ 1½ “ and each wing is 15’ 1 7/8” by 4’ 11”. The High Renaissance stylistic period was short lived for about 25 years from 1495 to 1520. However, in such a short amount of time, some of the world’s most recognizable and famous artists earned their time in the spotlight including Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. The elements and principles of art focused on during this time were: “Forms, colors, and proportions, light and shade effects, spatial harmony, composition, perspective and anatomy.” 1 These characteristics were executed with such skill and dexterity that they fell into no archetype. Michelangelo’s major accomplishments during this period were in his architecture, paintings and sculpture. The Baroque style exhibited in Ruben’s work is an expression of religious apprehension
