Bio1A Spring 2011 Discussion Section Handout #9 Week of April 4, 2011 1. What is the carrier frequency for a disease in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium that is homozygous recessive and occurs in 1 out of every 625 live births? What assumptions must be met for this frequency to hold true? q^2 = 1/625 q = 1/25 p = 24/25 Carrier frequency = 2pq = 2 * (24/25) * (1/25) = 0.0768 = 7.7% Assumptions: Mating is random No new mutations No migration No selection 2. Which nucleic acids tend to be methylated and in what sequence? During DNA replication, how might I differentiate which strand is the template and which is the daughter? CpG tends to be methylated. The methylation will occur on the C in this sequence on both complementary DNA strands. During DNA replication, the replicating DNA will be hemimethylated (the template strands will be methylated, but the daughter strands will not) until the action of the maintenance methylase, DNMT1. 3. Describe the concept of dosage compensation.
