Phylogeny and Ecology • Isopods belong to the class Crustacea so they are NOT insects. They have a calcareous exoskeleton and jointed appendages. • Terrestrial isopods respire through the pleopods on their underside • They dry out relatively easily • Isopods are important detrius organisms that help recycle nutrients in terrestrial habitats Porcellio scaber (sowbug, introduced) Armadillidium vulgare (pillbug)

Warburg Isopod Behavioral Responses Chemoreception: Isopods respond to their own specific odor as well as the odor of other species. They are known to respond to acids and amines. Hygroreaction: Activity of isopods while moving, speed of movement, and duration of resting time is related to humidity. Response to humidity is influenced by temperature. Photoreaction: Some isopods are sensitive to blue and green wavelengths of light. Isopods are by nature nocturnal, and are increasingly negatively phototactic as temperature increases. Thermoreaction: Varies from species to species. Some are active regardless of temperature, while others have an optimal temperature range. Mechanorecption: They can respond to mechanical stimulus as with touch. Thigmokinesis and Aggregation: This relates to the behavior of isopods to come in contact with each other. When humidity is low, this increases. There is some evidence that excretion products also cause aggregation of isopods.

1. Students can use calipers to measure size of sponges (LxWxH). 2. Please sign out the extra goggles (6/lab) with student ID. Students are not allowed in lab without goggles. 3. Students can use thermometers to monitor temperature of the arena before and after the experiment or with and without the light on. They can also monitor RT or solution temperature. 4.
