Respiration = exchange of gases between body and air - Provides oxygen to body cells for energy - Removes carbon dioxide from body cells 2. Common cold is so common because the mode of transmission is airborne respiratory droplets and hand-to-hand contact. Prevention is difficult. 3. Sinusitis-Treatment: Broad-spectrum antibiotics, Decongestants, and Antihistamines. 4. Nasal polyps-Cause: overproduction of fluid in cells of mucous membrane, often result of allergic rhinitis. 5. Severe epistaxis-Treatment: surgical ligation of bleeding artery 6. Laryngeal cancer-Prognosis: the status of the cervical lymph nodes. 7. Atelectasis: caused by obstruction in bronchial tree; may be mucous plug, foreign object, or bronchogenic cancer. Risk factors: obesity, upper abdominal or chest surgery, neuromuscular weakness or any pulmonary disease. Pulmonary embolism: Obstruction of one or more pulmonary arteries by a thrombus (clot) that dislodges from another location and is carried through the venous system to the vessels of the lung. Factors: stasis of blood flow from immobility, injury to a vessel, predisposition to clot formation,
