Conservation Biology (Chapter 56) Human activities threaten Earth’s biodiversity Habitat destruction: human alteration of habitat Introduced species: species that humans move (intentionally or accidentally) from species’ native locations to new geographic locations Overexploitation: human harvesting of wild organisms at rates exceeding the ability of populations to rebound Loss of biodiversity Why care about the loss of biodiversity? Purest reason – biophilia : our sense of connection to nature and other forms of life Concern for future generation – Is it fair to deprive them of earth’s species richness? Crucial natural resources – crops, fibers, medicines, genetic diversity Ecosystem services – all the processes through which natural ecosystems help sustain human life on earth Three levels of biodiversity Genetic diversity: individual genetic variation within a population and between populations o Product of Nature’s long-term experiments
