BUL 6444 Introduction- Unit 1 The Relationship between Law and Ethics What is law? Law is legislation passed by leaders where a violation results in punishment. (broad) What is ethics? Ethics is branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions.   Issues to consider: legality and ethics 1. If an act is legal is it also ethical? 2. If an act is illegal is it automatically unethical? 3. Does legal compliance equal ethical behavior? a. The answer to all of the above questions depends on the person, his/her morals and standards and what he/she believes to be true and of good character. The History and Nature of Law What is jurisprudence? Jurisprudence is the science, philosophy and study of law. Legal Systems There are two types of legal systems in the world 1. Common Law a.
