Unformatted text preview: 28. a) Lactate dehydro genase is the enzyme that oxidizes lactate to give pxgivate. Lactate is the alcohol-acid corresponding to the ketone-aCiid pyruVate. 'So this gives the oxidation half-reaction. The reduction half—reaction is the reduction of oxaloacetate, and that is the reverse of the last reaction of the citric acid cycle in which ma___l_ate IS oxidized to oxaloacetate. So the balanced reaction is: oxaloacet‘ate + lactate -> malate + pyruvate: ' ‘ ' ‘ ' ' ’ ' ‘ (I300 COOH 3 ' $00" ‘7 COOH $=0 ‘ ' x—HO-tH ‘Hlo + HC—OH _ coo- ' C113 7 " ; COO' (3H3 oxaloacetate ‘laCtate, 'y ’ , , malate . ._ _ , pyruvate:; a b) The enzymes that catalyze the two half-reaCtions are, as noted above, lactate dehydrogenase’ and malate dehydrogenaSe, Both enzymes use NAD+ as oo- -fac.tor So the two reactions can be linked, by supplying a catalytic amount of NAD+: I oxaloacetate + NADH -> malate + NAD+ : (malate dehydrogenase) lactate + NAD“ -> pyruvate + NADH ' (lactate dehydrogenase) __—_.—_..__a_.._ ____________________________________________________________________ 29. bases in core; of helix grooves 1 sugar/ phos. backbone BlOC*2580 F2006 statistics - exam: multiple- choice section average: 25. 6/40; written section average: 39/60 Exam average= 65% Final Course average: 73. 5%; 12 failures out of 655 students ...

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
