Darren Pinder Discussion Questions January 12, 2010 “The Ramayana” Was a purpose of this work to reach a wider audience with the use of fantastic imagery and artwork? If we were to look at oral tradition versus written, we can see how both are important. Oral tradition reached a much wider audience many years ago. Written history is for those who can read, the scholars, while oral tradition can be accepted and understood by everyone. There are also some human virtues expressed in this work through the good and bad characters. Rama is regarded as the seventh incarnation of the god Vishnu. Therefore, he is regarded as the perfect human being, as he is generous, noble, brave, and loyal. Some of the virtues mentioned above are expressed in the stories of Rama’s birth, marriage to Sita, his coronation and his eventual exile into the forest. “The World of the Storyteller” What is one characteristic used to describe the storyteller in a village? He relies solely on himself. He must have a massive memory able to contain all 24,000
