UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS FACULTY OF ENGINEERING España, Manila DC AND SOLAR CABLES INTRODUCTION The third most evident renewable energy source asides hydro and wind power is the solar photovoltaic systems in terms of its capacity. Basically, how photovoltaic system works starts with photovoltaic cells absorbing the light which knocks electrons loose and these electron flow creating an electrical current and these currents are called Direct Current (DC). These direct current flows through cables in order to be of use. DC and Solar cables are the type of cables made solely for applications in photovoltaic power systems. These solar cables are made in order to interconnect numbers of solar panels and other components used in a photovoltaic system. Nowadays, there is an increase in installation of solar technology in the world, therefore, the demand in DC and Solar cable also boosted. DEFINITION A DC and Solar cable are the type of cable used in solar photovoltaic systems in order to interconnect solar panels and other elements in the system. Currently, there are two types of DC solar cables which includes the module cables and DC main cables. The module cables are connected into a string which traces to the generator junction box while the main DC cable connects the generator junction box to the inverter. These inverters are used in order to convert the DC current to an AC current for the purpose that most of the appliances used at households operates at AC or for grid connection. Both the main DC cable and module cable can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications and they are flexible, resistant to abrasion and moisture, and have high mechanical strength in extreme weather conditions.
