Jordan Carlson Professor Alice Finkelstein Children’s Literature 2.6.2020 Essay 1. Cinderella Tales Growing up I remember Cinderella being about a young girl who lives with her evil stepmother and evil step-sisters. I remember watching the movie Cinderella and there being fairies all around her all the time, along with some animals if I am remembering it correctly. After reading Perrault’s Cinderella, I noticed that the two I feel are a lot alike and it was almost exactly how I remember Cinderella being when I was younger. When it comes to Cinderella being multicultural phenomena, I never realized how many different versions there were until I read Fair, Brown, and Trembling and Billy Beg and His Bull. Both of these books are different versions of an Irish Cinderella Tale. The first tale I am going to discuss is Billy Beg and His Bull. This cinderella tale takes place in Ireland. I was lost at points while reading this book because it wasn’t like any other cinderella tale that I had read or heard about. Instead of it being about a young beautiful girl trying to find her prince charming, it was about a young boy and his bull trying to escape and be free from Billy’s new stepmother. The stepmother was not fond of either Billy or his bull so she had faked sick. The first day Billy’s dad pushed it off, after the third day of her becoming worse
