COURSE TITLE: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY (2,0,2) COURSE CODE : BI 455 Course Description The Intellectual Property in the Publishing Industry course teaches students how to protect and exploit their creative works. Based on the conventional practices of the publishing industry, it offers practical information to help these upcoming publishers both to exploit their IP rights as economic assets and to avoid infringing the rights of others. The concepts covered are equally relevant to players in the book value chain. The course also covers the interface of copyright with other emerging issues such as protection creative works in digital and electronic publishing. Course Objectives: At the end of the course, students are expected to: appreciate the fundamentals of copyright law, fair use and the copyright licensing issues involved in using a wide variety of materials protected by copyright in many situations (Neighboring right) increase their knowledge and understanding of copyright and licensing issues (selling right) learn more about why copyright law exists and where it all started (the history of copyright) know how to resolve basic copyright/licensing questions; when, and who to ask for
