Gary Ingram HW #1 EE 4352 Problem 1 1. Who invented the transistor? - 3 scientest from Bell laboratories, John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, William Shockley 2. Why did the inventor name it a transistor? - The name transistor comes from the 'trans' of transmitter and 'sistor' of resistor. The transistor was the first device designed to act as both a transmitter, converting sound waves into electronic waves, and resistor, controlling electronic current. 3. What does CMOS stand for? - Complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) 4. What is an IC? Who invented the IC? What year? - IC Integrated Circuit is a semiconductor wafer on which thousands or millions of tiny resistors, capacitors, and transistors are fabricated. Invented by Jack Kilby in 1958. 5. What does CAD stand for and why do we need CAD tools? - Computer Aided Design (CAD), We need this because as the complexity of the IC increases, it is more difficult and would take a long time to design and test the design manually. Also makes for easier troubleshooting.
