Student Name: Emily McBride Date: March 23, 2020 Title of pathophysiology: Acute Renal Failure Definition This is when your kidneys suddenly lose the ability to eliminate excess salts, fluids, and waste materials from the blood. Causes This occurs when your kidneys suddenly become unable to filter waste products from your blood. When your kidneys lose their filtering ability, dangerous levels of wastes may accumulate, and your blood's chemical makeup may get out of balance. It develops rapidly, usually in less than a few days. Acute tubular necrosis, severe dehydration, an autoimmune disease, or a urinary tract obstruction are all diseases that can cause this. Acute kidney failure is most common in people who are already hospitalized, particularly in critically ill people who need intensive care. S/S There are several characteristics for patients who have acute renal failure. You can often have fatigue, confusion, nausea, weakness, irregular heartbeat, angina, seizures and tremors. Most importantly you can have high blood pressure, decreased urine output and increased amount of fluid retention. You can also have bloody stools, a foul odor and slow, sluggish movements.
