Student Name: Emily McBride Date: March 23, 2020 Title of pathophysiology: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Definition This is when your body produces insulin but does not make enough or does not use the insulin sufficiently. Causes Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin. Exactly why this happens is unknown, although genetics and environmental factors, such as being overweight and inactive, seem to be contributing factors. Patients have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes if they are older, have obesity, have a family history of diabetes, or do not exercise. Having prediabetes also increases said risk. S/S The onset of this diabetes is often insidious at first, it can take years for a patient to realize that have diabetes. Some patients do not know they have Type 2 Diabetes until they have arrived in the hospital. Some of the common symptoms are polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, fatigue, slow-healing sores, unintended weight loss and darkened areas of skin. Complications Maintaining a normal blood sugar level can dramatically reduce the risk of many complications. Life threatening complications can come from untreated
