Vowels Allophones C allophony Summary Canadian English vs. RP vs. GA The textbook spends a lot of time discussing the diೲerences between Received Pronounciation (RP) and General American (GA) dialects Don’t worry about learning all of these diೲerences! In this course we are discussing Canadian English, which is quite similar to GA Focus on the GA portions of the textbook, but also keep in mind that there will be some diೲerences, especially in vowels 4

Vowels Allophones C allophony Summary Cardinal vowels For simplicity, linguists usually use the cardinal vowel that is closest to the vowel actually used in a particular language For instance, the [e] vowel in a language does not necessarily occur exactly at the point marked [e] on the vowel chart Vowel symbols may thus refer to slightly diೲerent segments from language to language If accuracy is needed, a vowel plot can be shown, or diacritics may be used to indicate the vowel is slightly higher, further back, etc. from the cardinal vowel 9
