Joya Lewis Dr. Sircy World Literature 5 May 2020 Reflection in the Tram I chose to reread Sealed Off by Eileen Chang. It is short and to the point, so it will be easier and quicker to analyze than a story with multiple chapters like Tale of Genji , for example. Rereading Sealed Off has allowed me to see how I related to these characters during my first reading and if I do during my second reading. The central characters of Sealed Off are Lu Zongzhen and Wu Cuiyuan. I was surprised that the story focused on the interaction between two people. The first three paragraphs included strange diction, personification of seemingly random objects and a focus on small details. Chang describes the trams as “soft and slippery, long old worms” and says things like “the driver stared at the wriggling rails, and did not go mad.” These features led me to think the story would focus on the city and the dynamics between various citizens. The funniest thing about my first reaction was that I did not realize where everyone was placed. I must have read it too fast and assumed they were off the tram. I thought Zongzhen was sitting at a table near a café

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
