May 23, 2011 Lecture part 1 First issue of economic development: Over-population, assumption is that more populous countries should be richer than less populous countries. Simply having a population is not enough. Need people to turn human and economic development. Statistics: (**2:30) World population is 7 billion this year. Overpopulation: ZPG (zero population growth). Nature of demography, divide the population into 3 categories, young, middle, old. *See chart on notes* Introduce ZPG to the growing population. India has a growing population. Korea has less young children than 20-30 year olds. Most of the problem comes about Famine – 1975! By William and Paul Paddock (**15) Population growth = Births – deaths. The pop of the 3 rd world will expand, so the population will be facing famine in 1975. They want to apply the thesis for “Triage” - Doctors will divide into 3 people, people who will die w/o medicine, and ppl who die with medicine. Only focus on those who will survive with medicine. Only country is USA. (**17). For western countries, food per capita has been increasing. Malthus – English clergymen economist. Purpose is that ideas of French rev is wrong - with paternity, fraternity the human can be perfect. The populations can double every 5 years. POPN: 1 2 4 8 16 32 geometric Food: 1 2 3 4 5 6 arithmetic Population grows in geometric but food grows by arithmetic. Why we don’t see the growth in population is the checks to population. (**22) Positive: kill off people who are already born. War, famine, pestilence. Misery Preventive: late marriage, prostitution, factors of contraception. Give rise to vices. Life on earth should have misery or vice. Many people b4 Malthus has thought about over population.
