One way you can manipulate the environment to help make teaching sessions more successful is too eliminate distractions. Shut the patient’s TV off, close the door to the room, and pull a chair up to the patient in bed. Being at the level of the patient will help maintaining eye contact during teaching. Sometimes it is good to have a close family member in the room when you are going to start educating and other times the patient might be more willing to participate in teaching sessions if there is no family there.
