1. Hello, everyone, welcome to our course “Principles of chemical engineering”. Today is the first lecture, an introduction. 2. The contents contain three parts: the course briefs, the unit operations, and the course nature and missions. 3. Now the first part, course briefs. This picture shows the pipelines in factory. The pipes have different sizes and materials. The colors mean different mediums, for example, generally, red is steam, green is water, yellow is ammonia. These mediums are in different temperatures and pressures. These are related to the first chapter of our course, fluid transportation. 4. Let’s have an overlook on our course. This semester we will take the first part of theoretical course and corresponding experiments. Next semester, in addition to the second half of theoretical and experimental courses, there will be also a course design, the designing of a distillation column. 1

5. Our teaching group. This is Me, Professor Jia Yuanyuan. I am the course instructor. Dr. Zhao Wenli, Pr. Wu Zhiguo, Dr. Wu Liya Miss Yan Lihong, Pr. Cao Jingguo, and Professor Hao Qinglan. 6. We will have assignments every week. So Assignments are required to be scanned (or photographed) and sent to your teachers weekly. PPTs, lecture videos and scanned paper materials will be provided by teachers on Dingding. If you have any question, you will be answered on Dingding. 7. Evaluation will be done on the basis of regular grades, accounting for 40% and final exam, accounting for 60%. Regular grades include three parts, weekly assignments, chapter tests and essay. 8. Now let’s move to Part 2, unit operations. We can see in this picture, these are pipes, and these are heat exchangers, Shell and tube heat exchangers. We will learn heat transfer next semester. 9. Unit operations are the subject of our course. The introduction focuses on the following four issues: The first one, What are Unit Operations 单元操作 ? The second one, Why unit operations are useful 2

and important? The third one, The particularities of unit operations in bioengineering. The last one, How to do it? 10. Biotechnology processes consist of two steps: physical processes and chemical or biochemical reactions. The physical processes are divided into a series of steps, called unit operations. 11. To illustrate what are unit operations, let’s examine an example: production of spirits from Discovery channel. Part of the video was cut out to highlight our theme. 21’, stop, distillation, a kind of unit operation. The fermented alcoholic liquid was heated to boiling point in this container, which is called, STILL.
