“The Gift” by Rosario Ferre, relates the life of two girls one is being filthy rich and another one who have struck up the typically troublesome alliance between an upper and upcoming class member. The Merceditas Cáceres and Carlotta Rodriguez Their life was misfortune of the tragedy that took place in recent events. They have been expelled from Sacred heart school. However, Carlotta and Merceditas did not give up and face the reality like a warrior. Neither one of them wanted anyone’s pettiness towards their challenges. They have been through the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes and recognition and understanding of the difference between right and wrong. Discrimination and feminism are something we all face. Most of the time, we are subject to prejudice and bias based on what we look like, and what we believe in. “The Gift,” describes a friendship between two Puerto Rican girls in a Catholic girls school and reveals the racism and elitism in the church hierarchy and in the society. The gift is twice given and changes in symbolism from a beauty pageant prize to a simple gift of friendship to a sarcastic missive. These girls had to face many challenges to finds way to survive. Carlotta tells Merceditas about the way the hills look and the town works, and every little detail and this brings such pleasure to Merceditas.
