Matthew Church Critical Analyses and Writing II MWF 9:30-10:20 “We Want Small Class Sizes! Thanks.” –America Education is a very important thing to have in one’s life. It allows a person to grow intellectually and to become very knowledgeable. Humans begin to learn and gather information as babies; we learn from every sound we hear, every movement we see, and every surface we touch. Our minds are always open for new information, seeking unknown knowledge and being receptive to new ideas. It has been said many times that “knowledge is power”, so why not harness that power? Why not take hold of this gift and work it to its full potential? Why not start at an elementary level with students to prepare them for a successful life? Why not prepare a path for these students that leads to a path of higher performance in the real world? Smaller classes can be the answer. Smaller classes allow students to perform better academically, to have a higher graduation rate, to attend college, and to have a successful career after college. Small classes allow teachers to get closer to their students, and small classes help lead to successful college graduates who enter the work force and thus help boost the economy. Academic performance, teacher-student relations, and economic betterment are all reasons why schools should provide a higher number of

Church 2 smaller class sizes from elementary schools to college universities. What defines a small class? According to one study, the optimal class size is about seventeen, and regular class sizes average about twenty two students a teacher (Harris 149). Another researcher, Francine Deutsch, Professor of Psychology and Education at Mount Holyoke College, writes that smaller class sizes tend to range from about thirteen to seventeen students, and regular class sizes range from about twenty two to twenty five students ( Deutsch 36). These average class size numbers are mostly considered for kindergarten through the third grade. There are not many studies performed on upper grade levels to say what their small class size would be, but a survey at Oklahoma State University was given to one hundred students to see what size they considered a small college class to be. It was found that eighty one percent of these students believe that a small class is between eleven and thirty students. Seventeen percent of these students believe the number to be between thirty one and fifty students. Anything larger than fifty was considered a large class to these OSU students (Church). Even at a college level, according to Church’s survey, an ideal class size is about twenty which is really close to seventeen like the elementary levels.
