Interpretation: the affirmative must establish the extent of his/her fiat in the 1AC  Violation: the affirmative fiats a new alternative in the 1AR Standards 1) Time Skew—By using new fiat in the 1AR, the affirmative can effectively de-link 7  minutes of negative speech time that attacked the advocacy in the AC. All the time I  spent making arguments was against the position established in the AC, thus none of  my responses apply to a new alternative the affirmative can run in the rebuttal. Fiat in  the 1AR is tantamount to running a new AC which I will only get one speech to respond  to. Further, I am forced to run a new shell in the NR as my only check against the  fairness of the position, putting me at a huge disadvantage. The time tradeoff puts the  affirmative at an advantage by giving him/her two speeches totaling 7 minutes to  advance a new position whereas I only have one speech sandwiched in the middle
