Dustin Lee 11/28/2006 History Block F Geography - Italian peninsula looks like a boot jutting into the Mediterranean Sea - Italy has the advantage of broad, fertile plains, both in the north under the shadow of the Alps Peoples - The Latins migrated into Italy by 800 B.C. - They settled along the Tiber River - Etruscans lived in the Roman area in the north of Rome - The Romans adapted the alphabet from the Etruscans that had earlier acquired it from the Greeks The Roman Republic - The Romans drove out their Etruscan ruler in 509 BC - The Romans set up a new government they called the Republic The Government Takes Shape - The most powerful governing body was the senate - Its 300 members were all patricians - Each year the senators elected from the patrician class two consuls o Their job was to supervise the business of government and command the armies o They could only serve one term - In the event of war, the senate might choose a dictator - Each dictator was granted six months to rule - Cincinnatus was a model dictator
