Lecture 6 Notes Beneficial Insects o Parasitoids (insect whose larvae consume their host) o Parasitic wasps o Parasitic flies o Predators (an animal that kills and eats animals) o Preying mantids o Dragonflies o Paper wasps o Spiders External Parasitoid o Female wasp paralyzes caterpillar with venom o Female wasp lays eggs on outside of caterpillar o Larvae hatch and feed on caterpillar o *Female wasp determines sex of her young o *Fertilized egg female o *Unfertilized egg male Internal Parasitoid o Female adult wasp lays eggs inside caterpillar o Wasp larvae hatch and eat caterpillar from inside **but don’t damage internal caterpillar organs o Larvae ooze out of host and spin cocoon Bacteria that attack insects ( Bacillus thuringiensis B.t.) 1. There are several varieties 2. Viruses that attack insects (added) 3. Each variety is specific for one group of insects 4. Bacteria produce toxic protein kills insect 5. B.t. protein
