Key questions… 1. What is neural plasticity ? 1. Is there a critical (or sensitive ) period for language acquisition? 1. What is the role of experience in brain organization and function – and how does this apply to our understanding of how language develops in children?

Neural Plasticity Neural plasticity is the ability of the brain to change its own structure. Not all of the brain is plastic – some of it’s structure is invariant. We lose plasticity with age. The loss of plasticity is the price we pay for “specialization” of neural circuitry. Specialization = optimal efficiency and performance Learning takes advantage of plasticity

When you are born When you are born you a born with essentially all of your neurons IN PLACE, but the brain is about ¼ of its adult size. That is because many of the axons and dendrites are yet to be formed.

Synaptogenesis This big word means the creation of synapses. Neighboring axons and dendrites share a chemically based mutual attraction Dendrites then develop receptors for the neurotransmitter released by the axon
