Identification of SLI is Poor However, 70% of the kindergarten children “identified” had never been diagnosed or treated for language impairment (Tomblin et al. 1997). That means that almost 5% of the population may have this developmental disorder, but are not identified as having it until the age 6 Need for improved approach to early identification to enhance children’s opportunities for school success.

A brief history of identification of “SLI” as a clinical category. b/w 1989 and 1993, the term SLI became used in the scientific community. 1996, SLI the psychometric approach was still the traditional approach to identification (i.e., low end of normal distribution) 1998, when Schuele & Hadley (1998) was published, the field still had not yet identified “clinical markers” to be used for identification. 1999, Tager-Flusberg & Cooper (1999) summarized discussions from an NIH-sponsored working group on defining SLI and identified promising clinical markers.
