Hausheer Kristin Hausheer HR 212 Dr . Hasler 25 April 2010 Reflection on Peter Brook’s production of Marat/Sade Marat/Sade is an adaption of the German play by Peter Weiss, The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade , published in 1967 . Both the play and the movie take place in the bathhouse of the Charenton mental asylum . The location translates perfectly to the big screen, making for a terrifying movie-going experience . Throughout the movie, the viewer catches glimpses of the bars, as if they are the only thing keeping chaos at bay, but by the end, the audience is still confronted with this chaos and the harsh realities of human existence . Weiss’ play puts the beliefs of the Jacobin revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat in combat with those of the Marquis de Sade . While imprisoned, the actual Marquis de Sade truly did write and direct plays with the inmates of Charenton . Marat himself seems more concerned with equality
