Chapter 3 Social Contexts and Socioemotional Development Notes Contemporary Theories Two main – Brofenbrenner’s ecological theory and Erikson’s life-span development theory Brofenbrenner’s Ecological Theory Five environmental systems that influence child 1. Microsystem – setting where individuals spend most of their time 2. Mesosystem – connections between Microsystems (family and school) 3. Exosystem – experiences in one setting affects the students and teachers 4. Macrosystem – effects of culture 5. Chronosystem – sociohistorical conditions of a child Erikson’s Life-Span Development Theory Eight Stages of Human Development 1. Trust versus mistrust – first year of life, treated warmly, is cared for, if mistrust grows child was mistreated 2. Autonomy versus shame and doubt – 1- 3, discover own independence and that they are in charge of own actions 3. Initiative versus guilt – 3- 5, need to engage in active, purposeful actions 4. Industry versus inferiority – 6 – puberty, master knowledge and intellectual skills 5. Identity versus identity confusion – adolescent years, figuring out who they are 6. Intimacy versus isolation – early adult years (20-30s), form close relationship with someone 7. Generativity versus stagnation – middle adult years (40-50s), help the next generation 8. Integrity versus despair – late adult years, evaluate life, see if good Not always in this order (females) Social Contexts of Development Families Parenting styles 1. Authoritarian – restrictive and punitive, little communication between child and parent, strict limits and control, socially incompetent
