Derek Hull TER #2 “Merit Pay” 01/26/10 EDT 190 Section A TER #2 Merit Pay is rapidly becoming a topic of interest in the educational field. Merit pay is where a teacher will get a supplement to their salary based on certain criteria. There is not only one question in regards to the issue of merit pay. One issue is whether or not that school districts should even offer merit pay. Another issue is how should merit pay be decided, or in other words, what criteria should be used to decide merit pay. In reading about this issue, I can see both pros and cons and am not really sure what should be done about it. First, some of the reasons why I think that merit pay is a good thing for teachers. One is that it is a reward to those teachers who are excellent. It creates a standard for teachers to strive for. By basing merit pay on quality, it would raise the level of education that students receive. I say this because all teachers would work harder and want to help their students to achieve, to get the higher pay. Yes, it is a selfish reason for
