Of the 4,249 speaking characters in the 101 kid friendly films, only 28% are  female. 83% of narrators of those films are male. USC study 2006 Does this make a difference? Sex and Gender Sex refers to whether one is genetically male or females Gender  Gender differences Macro (work, politics, culture) Micro (nonverbal and verbal interactions) Gender roles Gender roles are set of cultural expectations that define the ways in which the  member of each sex should behave Gender roles are a major source of social inequality Women are a minority Group Not because of smaller numbers. Given higher mortality rates for men and more lives of men lost in wars, there  are more women than men. **The key characteristic of a minority group is that it lacks power relative to a  dominant group. Patriarchy* A system of social organization in which men have a disproportionate share of  power Patriarchy is rooted in cultural and legal systems that historically gave fathers  authority in family, made wives and children dependent on husbands and
