Development of Sociology Founder: Frenchman, Auguste Comte Latin word socius meaning companion or with others Greek logos meaning study of Comte sought to establish sociology as a science—initially called it social  physics? Who really has power?   Who benefits under the existing social arrangements and who does not? Is US a meritocratic society in which talent and effort combine to stratify people  fairly? Depends on socioeconomic status But how free are we? We all have at some point trapped by events and conditions beyond control? Any  examples?
