CS 1003 9/23/11 3:00 A9/P9 Charles Ellis COMPUTER RELATED ILLNESSES Introduction Computers have made great changes in our lives. People use the computer more often to do more tasks in school and on the job. However, along with some of the benefits of a computer, they also can cause some illnesses or disabilities for people. These are caused when people use them for extended amounts of time. Some of these problems occur in the hands and wrists. One problem is called “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome”. What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? It affects the hand and wrist. It is defined as a pinching of the median nerve within the wrist (4). At the base of the palm is a tight canal or tunnel where tendons and a nerve go from the forearm to the hand have to pass to get into the hand. The nerve that passes through this narrow tunnel is called the “Median nerve” (2). If this nerve becomes pinched, it causes numbness and tingling in the area of the nerve in the wrist. Here is a picture of the hand and the median nerve (2).
