09/23/2011 Introduction to African History Colonial Rule (How do Europeans administer their colonial possessions?) French Model 1. Direct Rule/Assimilation Make colonies as French as possible; Intention is to create French  Africa; process of modernity; Natives had to give up their identity  and way of life to be French; Seen as very oppressive to the local  people Got rid of the local African leaders and brought French  administrators from France to rule to colony, while training the  Africans to assimilate to French culture, history and civilization.  Then they will get the Africans that have assimilated ready to  repleace the French administrators in the colony.  “Evolue” class: the ones who have evolved into the French class;  have achieved assimilation; this would be proof that Africans can  progress and grow and not be backwards, culturally.
