Assignment #1 The emerging technology that I have selected is AI Assistants. There are many characteristics of AI Assistants that include: discourse acknowledgement, solving mathematical problems, access to a reliable information source, and think critically. The great usage of AI in society today is significant. For example, self-checkout machines are everywhere right now including Walmart, Superstore and even fast-food restaurants such as Mcdonald's. AI is taking over people’s jobs and that can lead to an increase in unemployment. In addition, teens are getting addicted to these AIs such as phones which are truly destroying their lives. Cyberbullying is a huge problem currently on social media and it is incredibly dangerous for these young adults to be facing such mean, rude and hurtful comments that can lead to depression and suicidal thoughts. Lastly, AI can be both useful and harmful. The issue that I am focusing on is privacy. It means that the state of being liberated from being watched by others. AI is becoming very dangerous due to the many privacy issues. Various customer products, from smart home machines to PC applications will, in general, have highlights that make them powerless against information abuse by AI. To exacerbate the issue, individuals are regularly uninformed how much information their product and devices create, process, or shared. Also, as we become progressively dependent on computerized innovation in our regular daily existences, the potential for misuse will just increase significantly. AI can turn into a dark space that can be used by the wrong people in its many wrongful ways.
The ethical frame that I am applying to my assessment of these technologies and issues is Utilitarianism. It “is an ethical theory that determines right from wrong by focusing on outcomes. It is a form of consequentialism”(1). This ethical theory can be appropriately applied to these topics because there are enormous ways of using AI whether it was in the right way or abusive way. This ethical theory, utilitarianism can determine when people are wrongfully using these technologies such as hacking into houses through their smart home devices, etc. Furthermore, they threaten people to lose occupations, separate them from having the option to comprehend the information we analyze and leave the seniors isolated from human contact. This compromises our lives, and it can eventually drive us to extinction. These drawbacks are important and extremely serious to consider before AI assistants are implemented.
