FINITE MATH – MGF 1106 – SUMMER B 2009 Instructor : Barry Griffiths E-mail : Class Time : Monday-Thursday 2:00 – 3:50pm Class Location : PSY 108 Office : MAP 115 Textbook: Finite Mathematics and its Applications , ninth edition, by Goldstein, Schneider and Siegel (available online and in the bookstore) Online Homework: There will be three online assignments, which will count 15% towards your final grade. Go to to register and log-in, using the instructions printed on the last few pages of the syllabus and the access code enclosed with the textbook. In-Class Quizzes: A short quiz will be given during nine of the lectures. They will be of a similar standard to the homework questions at the end of each section in the book, and will contribute 20% of your final grade. Exams: There will be three midterm exams which will count for 45% of your final grade, and a comprehensive final exam worth 20%. However if you score well on the final exam it will replace the lowest midterm exam and count for 35%. EXAMS MUST BE SCHEDULED IN ADVANCE USING THE MY MATH LAB PROGRAM. Note: Two points will be deducted any time you fail to pick up graded work. Calculators: The use of a TI-30XA calculator is permitted during the exams and quizzes. Grade Policy: Final grade assignment follows the standard scale: Grade of A Average of 90-100 Grade of D Average of 60-69 Grade of B Average of 80-89 Grade of F Average below 60 Grade of C Average of 70-79 NC grades cannot be awarded in this class Attendance/Etiquette: It is strongly recommended that you attend all lectures, and pay attention. Experience has showed that students who regularly miss class do not perform up to their potential and often fail the class. Once inside the lecture hall you should turn off all cell-phones and pagers and not use them during class. Leaving a lecture early without a pre-approved reason will result in a 7-point penalty on the next exam. NO MAKE-UP EXAMS OR QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN IN THIS CLASS. Extra Help: The Math Lab (MAP 113) is available free of charge to all students enrolled in the course. It is open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm, and on Sunday from 2-6. Cheating: Anyone who compromises the integrity of the exams or quizzes will be subject to harsh penalties, up to and including receiving a failing grade for the course.
