HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS – MHF 4404 – FALL 2011 Instructor: Barry Griffiths E-mail: Class Time: TR 6:00 – 7:15pm Class Location: CL1 205 Office: MAP 115 Textbook: The History of Mathematics, by Burton (available online and in the bookstore) Homework: Six homework assignments will be given during the semester, which will contribute 30% to your overall grade. Each will consist of twelve questions, ranging from basic calculations that should take no more than a few minutes, to challenging problems that may require several days to think about and complete. Each homework will be collected on the due date shown below, and grading will be conducted on the basis of precision and presentation. Because this is an upper-level class, there will be a strong emphasis on clearly presenting your work, which means that simply obtaining the correct answer is generally not sufficient. Students are permitted and encouraged to work in small groups. Quizzes: Six short quizzes will be given, and each will last between 30 and 45 minutes. They will be of a similar standard to the homework questions assigned, and will contribute 30% to your final grade. Exams: There will be two midterm exams and a final exam. Each will take up an entire class period, and altogether they will contribute 40% to your overall grade. Calculators: Scientific calculators may be used during the exams and quizzes. Grade Policy: Grades will generally be awarded according to the following scale: A : 90-100% B : 80-89% C : 70-79% D : 60-69% F : 0-59% Attendance: I intend to cover a lot of material during this course. It is therefore essential that you attend all the lectures. Excused absences (death in the family, medical problems, official UCF functions etc.) for exams and quizzes will not hurt your overall grade, but they must be supported in writing within one week. Absences caused by travel plans will result in a score of zero being given. No make-up exams or quizzes will be given in this class.
