Chapter 8 Personality Disorders and Impulse Control Disorders I. Personality Disorders Personality Disorders are characterized by behavioral patterns that are inflexible and maladaptive, causing personal and social problems, impaired functioning and defective perception of self and others. Diagnosing personality disorders is difficult since a number of traits, not just one must be considered. DSM IV lists ten specific personality disorders and groups them in three clusters. A. Disorders Characterized by Odd or Eccentric Behaviors 1. Paranoid Personality Disorder Distrust and suspiciousness of others; excessive jealousy and hypersensitivity. (ex. Yiayia lol) 2. Schizoid Personality Disorder Socially isolated, recluse and withdrawn; emotionally cold and indifferent. (Don’t talk with anyone) 3. Schizotypal Personality Disorder Peculiar thoughts and behaviors with poor interpersonal relationships. Problems with thinking and perception. Both schizoid an schizotypal personalities are the forerunners of schizophrenia. (**Schizotypal is odd and strange thoughts. Schizophrenia does not) B. Disorders Characterized by Dramatic, Emotional, or Erratic Behaviors 1. Histrionic Personality Disorder Self-dramatization, exaggerated emotional expressions, and attention- seeking behavior. Shallow and egocentric.
